Milk Mushrooms Shoot – October 2016

Milk Mushrooms Shoot

Milk Mushrooms      Milk mushrooms

Last October, I came across these Milk Mushrooms on the property one day.  I quickly went to the house to gather what I needed for a photo shoot.

First I wanted to get a low ground level shot.  I found that I needed to remove all the grass that was in the way, because at the low angle, even  blades of grass were in the line of sight.  I noticed a caterpillar larva close by and placed it in the frame.  Then I had the idea of adding water and found a spray bottle to add that element to the shot.  When finally ready, I had to lie down on the tarp to use the live camera mode on zoom to get the focus right.

Once fully set up, I could stand and hold the flash at different positions and distances to try various lighting angles for the best effect.  The biggest need was getting at least some light under the mushrooms which required using two flash units in different positions.  All this was managed while using the remote camera trigger.  With one flash set to light low at the stems, I tried shots with the second flash flash at all kinds of positions.  High, low, back lighting the mushrooms, and every other angle that seem to give me something different.  These two pictures are the ones I like the best.

Here is the setup as it was for the pictures, and the equipment I usedmilk mushroom setup

  • Tamron 90mm f2.8 macro lens
  • Yongnuo 568 flash
