Adjusting exposure and flash with flowers on a cloudy day

Flowers and Flash

I had some time to go out with the camera today.  It was a cloudy day with very poor light.  So I decided to play around and experiment by under exposing the shots and using flash to bring the exposure back to the right setting for the flowers.  This acts to basically darken the background so it nearly goes away.  In most of these, I made additional adjustments to make the entire background totally black.   I also made additional adjustments in Lightroom to punch up the highlights, contrast, sharpness, and others.

To paraphrase a photographer I saw on Netflix last night…… One from the “Tales by Light” series…….  I don’t want to just take photographs.

I want to bring my own artistic judgments and adjustments to the photograph and create something that is uniquely my own.

So here are my pics of the day.

BTW – As I said, this was an experiment, as I was out using my 70-200mm lens with the 1.7 tele converter on and my magmod magbeam wildlife attachment on my flash.  (So….. I couldn’t find wildlife and changed my plans.)  Exposures were with iso at 100, and varied from f5.6 to f11, with a variety of shutter speeds from 1/60 to 1/500.  Usually with anywhere from -2/3 ev to -2 ev.  Next time I will try this with my macro lens and off camera flash, and should be able to get even better quality detail in the pics.

Thanks for the Look

I like that effect. I’ve tried that technique myself. If you see all the grass and weeds in the background it really distracts your attention.
